Garden City Beach, South Carolina

In the 1960s Jacob Claude McLain and Sina LaRue Crook purchased land at Garden City Beach, South Carolina, several miles from the ocean, and built several vacation cottages on the property. The duplex above was later renovated into apartments for Claude and Sina and their son Alfred and his family.

Before renovating and moving into the duplexes, Claude and Sina lived in this house on the South Carolina property known as the "bus house" because its two bedrooms were made from old school buses. (On the right of the picture, behind the screened porch, you can see the back end of one of the buses.) The bus house is a well-remembered piece of our visits to Garden City Beach, and many of us have slept on the porch or on an extra couch at the back of the bus that was Sina's room.
