This is what is left of downtown Cripple Creek, Virginia (yes, the town in the song.) It is also home to Col. Stephen Sanders (1747-1830) and his wife Isabella Campbell (1752-1819). It is only a few miles from the small crossroads of Crockett, where their daughter Letitia met and married resident Robert Crockett in 1806. There are many, many old homes near these two stores, along with several buildings which still have hitching posts out front.

The old mill at Cripple Creek still stands in testament to the past, cuddled away behind a large grove of trees across from the creek (you can easily miss it when you drive by if you are not there at the right time of day to catch the sun reflecting off the roof.)
